History:
Lou Handy first played for Mildenhall
Cricket Club in 1976 when he represented the clubs U13 XI. Such a start was
to be the first step towards 41 consecutive seasons in which he was to play for
the club (inducted March 2018).
Brother of fellow inductee Rick, he is the
eldest of the four Handy brothers to play for the club. His notable honours
convey the ever increasing impact he had and continues to have upon the club,
whether with a bat or ball as the recognised allrounder, or leading the club
through particular roles.
During the 1996 season Lou amassed 1000 runs, a
feat deservedly topped-off with the first of his three 2nd XI Player of the
Year awards. Half a decade on and the club had reached a cricketing pinnacle by
way of the Premier League, a standard in which Lou proudly remains unbeaten
(seven games!).
His clear leadership qualities and winning
mentality, coupled with tireless energy, underlined by his fielding awards -
very much a ‘Handy’ trait, inevitably lead to captaincy roles and this he
embraced over the years, standing as skipper for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th XI
As the years gathered, further cricketing
achievements beckoned, and it was in 2015 that Lou, recognised by his county
peers, was justifiably selected for Suffolk O50’s.
Beyond the field he threw typical vigour into
his club roles, be it as a key figure behind the MCC Ladies team, as a Youth
Team Manager, or even the MCC’s unofficial Tour Manager, a role symbolic of his
commitment towards the social side of the game.
Therefore it was with overwhelming support that
in 2014 he took over as club Chairman. Since then he has overseen a period of
historical cricketing success, ground development, financial security, while
maintaining passionately the clubs enduring philosophy through every element of
the club. Such efforts were naturally recognised when he won his second
Presidents Award (2017), which he received with reluctance and his usual
humility.
